Hello Nature's Notebook observers!
You may have heard that in anticipation of the launch of the new NN app, the USA-NPN team has been working to collect example phenophase photos for each species on the monitoring list. As of 2026, we have collected photos for the most important phenophases on a majority of plant species (and many animals as well!). These photos will be accessible in the app while observing and contribute to consistent and informed data.
After this major push, there are still a number of specific phenophases for which we could not find quality photos. This is where you come in! The USA-NPN is inviting you to publicly share your high quality photos of target plant species phenophases through our new phenophase photo “wishlist”. The list describes specific photos that we need and allows you to search for plants that you might already be observing.
If you are interested in contributing to this effort, a much more in-depth explanation can be found in the README document here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NEkxfM_dYjyh4-1cFh8jiWfzTHtoFVd4K8y4T-BHJgM/edit?usp=sharing
I will be the one reviewing submitted photos and preparing them for Nature's Notebook, so feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] with questions, comments, and suggestions. Thank you for all that you contribute, and happy observing !
