I manage a site on NPS property and often encounter issues with installing permanent signage--the park prefers non-permanent indicators like flagging or metal tags. This can be difficult for small, fragile-stemmed annuals like Pycnanthemum, Asclepias, etc. How do you all go about marking these types of plants?
Could you use a small marking flag and add the species name or a number to it? Something that makes sense for you? You may want to use a paint marker so it doesn't fade as quick as a Sharpie. I've used them on a friend's property. She was wanting to mark where a specific species was located in her woodlot. As we came across them, we set a flag adjacent to the stem, but in the ground. This allowed her to revisit those sites over a few years to observe how the colonies were doing. They were small orange flags sourced at a box store. They are perhaps 6" x 6" flag on a 12" metal stake. Easy and light weight to carry and use.
